Derek #DayNotes (06) for March 13, 2019
To learn more about the concept of #DayNotes, check out this blog.
Though it should go without saying and to be be 100% clear, these are not official communications from the Government of Canada but rather just my own personal notes about what I am doing.
Apologies in advance for my bad grammar, these notes are meant to be quick and dirty.
Had a great chat with Jordan Storozuk who serves as the Secretariat for the #D9. We had a good chat about networking the digital gov space globally and explored ideas about how to link my work with OneGov/OneGC to her work with the D9. One question I am curious about, is how to better link people on the ground floor. There are lots of networks like the D9 and Joint Council who link the execs in all our governments, but often for those of us working on the ground floor of projects we need to go up several levels in the hierarchy to access them … which generally doesn’t happen. The result is that we either build sporadic informal networks through social media or have no connections at all and work in silos. I hope to help change that through strengthening these networks. Part that is raising the profile of the networks that are already developing like the International Working Group on Digital championed by Susie Floresco or the Canadian Digital Government Slack channel lead by Beth Fox and crew from Nova Scotia.
Digital Government Research Project:
I had set aside time today to work on this (I am trying to set aside at least an hour a day, actually put it in my calendar as blocked off time) but today had to work through it for other deliverables. But I did spend some time setting up an out loud work period. I want to engage people openly as I scope this research. So for at least the next couple weeks I am going to try and have an out loud brainstorm session every Friday from 10:30am -12 noon EST. If you are interested in be a part of these let me know.
Municipal Innovation Pilot Project (MIPP):
Bianca Tomazeli and I met with the digital government team from the Province of New Brunswick to discuss the MIPP. They expressed interest in the project and asked good questions about governance, investment and security. They are also going to help connect us with some of the municipalities in the area. Thank you Lorna Brown for setting this up and Phil Fournier
Other:
I am have been wanting to work on my french for years. The Government of Canada has good programs to support their employees in learning french but first you need to take a placement test. I took mine today. Key takeaways, I have confidence and some familiarity with speaking french but need to expand my vocabulary and speak in tenses other then the present. Now that I have done my placement, I will start classes next week.
