Derek #DayNotes (05) for March 12, 2019
To learn more about the concept of #DayNotes, check out this blog.
Though it should go without saying and to be be 100% clear, these are not official communications from the Government of Canada but rather just my own personal notes about what I am doing.
Apologies in advance for my bad grammar, these notes are meant to be quick and dirty.
Today was a day of deadlines and deliverables we had as a whole team so that brought us together and built a sense of comradery.

Digital Government Research Project:
Today I read up on the UN e-government survey for 2018. It is a very dense document so i did not get through all of it. It was interesting to note how different the challenges are for e-government around the world. It also talked about the importance of access to devices and good bandwidth is for a functioning e-government. It also highlighted the importance of governments in making sure no one gets left behind, whether through regulation or service delvery. I was shocked to see that Canada dropped from 14th to 23rd on the UN’s E-government Development Index (EGDI). I want to dig into this deeper to understand.
Municipal Innovation Pilot Project (MIPP):

Team:
Today I worked on a couple key deliverables for our team. First, we are getting ready to do our annual report to the Chief Information Officer Council (CIOC) who fund our work. It is a great chance to highlight what we have done over the last year and also look to what is next. My job was to come up with a list of all the many partnerships with groups that are helping make the Open Accessible Digital Workspace a reality. I was both impressed by how deeply many members of our team were immersed and knowledgeable in these partnerships and also disappointed by own lack of knowledge in this area. I had been brought in to do partnership work and though I still hold this title, most of my work these days is less about the OADW and more about OneGC and other aspects of digital government.
The other major deliverable is providing an update for our part of the Open Government Action Plan. Our team is responsible for section 1.5 of this action plan:
1.5 Co-create a public, digital collaboration space where citizens and government employees can work together.
A public, digital collaboration space is launched, and made available for Canadians and government officials to use. The collaboration space will:
- allow users to register with a single, easy-to-use sign-in
- allow Canadians and government officials to share files, work collaboratively, and participate in community discussions
Part of this action plan is to get regular updates on progress. My job today was to collect the information to provide out update. The good news is we are well on our way with OADW Sign-in and GCcollab, to accomplishing this target.
I also developed a draft document highlighting how groups could leverage our new OADW Single Sign-In. This is still a draft but hopefully will make it real easy in the near future for groups to access and use our sign-in.
Special thanks to everyone on my team who helped out today. It was a real team effort.
Now I am tired and looking forward to a quiet evening with a warm cup of tea and a book/history documentary about Greece in prep for my trip their in May.
