Derek #DayNotes (04) for March 11, 2019
To learn more about the concept of #DayNotes, check out this blog.
Though it should go without saying and to be be 100% clear, these are not official communications from the Government of Canada but rather just my own personal notes about what I am doing.
Apologies in advance for my bad grammar, these notes are meant to be quick and dirty.
Well today hit me like a ton of bricks. Combination of losing an hour due to daylight savings time, setting my alarm for pm instead of am and thus sleeping in and having to rush off to work without breakfast and fighting a cold #Mondays. But still managed to struggle through a decently productive day.
The next thing for me to focus on for OneGC will be chatbots. I reviewed some work done by my colleague Heather Laird, signed up for an event on chatbots for Wednesday and created a channel for all of us working on chatbot stuff on the Canadian-digital-gov slack channel.
Participated in the International Working Group Digital. This is a regular Community of Practice call hosted by Susie Floresco from the Government of Ontario and includes people working in digital government from around the world (to get more involved tweet at Susie or myself). Today’s call was focused on the concept of “legislation as code” through the legislation as code demonstrator, a tri-governmental pilot presented to us by Nadia Webster from NZ who worked on the project. The platform they used is called Open Fisca. There is also an international community of practice around this work that can be found HERE.
Digital Government Research Project:
Sometimes it is good to ground yourself in the foundations so I spent a couple hours reading: Government of Canada Strategic Plan for Information Management and Information Technology 2017 to 2021 and our Digital Operations Strategic Plan: 2018–2022. I updated my Research Tracker.
Municipal Innovation Pilot Project (MIPP):
Finally, sent out the action items from last weeks MIPP business meeting and sent the calendar invite for our next meeting. Now I just need to sit down and actually do my action items from the list.

Also finally sent the email follow up for Glyn Jones from the UK’s Government about GCcollab, hopefully it is helpful and the beginning of more conversations. My hope is to find ways of link Glyn and others in governments around the world who are working on develop tools for collaboration within and across government. @Susie and @Aimee I am hoping to loop Glyn into some of our nerding system weaving projects.
We had our weekly team meeting of the Partnerships Team meeting today. Great chance to get all on the same page and help each other out.
